OK, it's finally done. I didn't expect anyone to jump in (George... dang!) before I could finish the blog. When I'm finalizing a new Blog, I like to create a placeholder thread here on the Museum, allowing me to capture the thread's direct URL, which I then place at the end of my Blog.
Anyway, since you dig Mego or Mad Monsters (hopefully both),
Read the Blog.

There is no doubt in my mind that Mego intended to make a Creature from the Black Lagoon. Neppy's hands and feet area dead ringer to Creech. So is Neppy's suit (without the red tunic). Think about it: every Star Trek alien is either directly taken from the TV show or has a direct link to it (Talosian and Keeper combined make the TV show Keeper from the pilot episode). The only one that stand out is Neptunian. I'm convinced that he was created with parts from the rejected Creature Mego had intended to make, but gave up on for some reason. I'm thinking that the Mego Creech would have had Neppy's scale suit but without the tunic, meaning fully scaled. I think Mego added the red tunic when they invented Neptunian (plus ading wings) .

It seems likely that the gloves and boots were intended for some kind of Creature-like figure in the Mad Monsters line. I wonder if the change of plan was less to do with AHI beating them to the market, and more to do with them beating them to the license?

Great blog post! I'm a true believer in this one as well. I dunno if they'd have pulled the creature because AHI beat them to market, that didn't seem to stop these guys.
Ben---What do you make of the registration dates? The other Monsters show filing dates in January 74, supplemental registrations in March 75, then official registration in 76. The Creature only shows an official registration date and it's November 1974...
One thought I have is that they came up with the 4 monsters first (Jan 74 or thereabouts) and then considered expanding to add the Creature in the fall of 74 for the 1975 line but perhaps decided against it because the Monsters were under-performing.
They also may have decided they couldn't make it sufficiently generic to distinguish from the official Universal character.
Or a combination of things.
It is interesting that it's the only one that doesn't have an adjective. Horrible Mummy, Dreadful Dracula, why not Creepy Creature?

Neppy has always seemed like a rejected Monster to me, so I've been a fan of this theory for a while. Always fun to see the backup documentation though!

I don't know about Neptunian's gloves and such being a rejected Gill Man. Wasn't the gimmick of the Mad Monsters that they had glow-in-the-dark hands? Seems to me that Mego would have kept that gimmick in line for any future additions to the line.
