Clark Kent:
Actually making a suit ended up pushing my mediocre sewing skills to the limit, but there's nothing like a well-tailored suit! The glasses are made from paper-clips,crazy-glue, and black paint. After four days of struggling with the suit, the glasses fell together in 30 minutes in an almost Zenlike way. It was a beautiful moment. Stay tuned for an easy open shirt to reveal costume, and a quick-change phone booth playset. Maybe a hat. The original had a hat, but it also had an ugly suit.

Cosmo Kramer:
Whenever we talk about what we'd like to see had Mego survived, I think about the TV Show toys that were so popular in the 70's, but are rarely seen today. With that in mind I present my first version of the Neo-Mego Cosmo Kramer from the Seinfeld show...This is in the prototype stage for now. It captures the attitude, but not the likeness I'm after.

Loki:
I think it sucks that one of Mego's best figures, The Mighty Thor, never had a playmate, so here we have his evil half-brother Loki, high atop his mountain lair.
The head and helmet are a one piece sculpture, brass ring and yellow vinyl chest piece, brass snap fasteners on the cape.

6-Inch Mr. Mxyzptlk:
I have to admit that it wasn't my fondest desire to have a customized Mr. Mxyptlk, but when I found a loose naked Spanky from Mego's Our Gang Series I saw my chance to correct the problem that has long irked Mego collectors. An action figure of Superman's impish nemesis simply can't be the same size as the Man of Steel. The Spanky body has a round belly and the right proportions for a successful conversion. The head is an original Sculpey sculpture, painted with acrylics.

Doctor Strange:
I saw Charlee's Dr. Strange, and just had to make one. What a great character! Now, I went with very Mego materials. The piping on the cape is that cheap squiggly gold stuff you can get at any Walgreens, and thanks to Photoshop, and the Lens Flare filter, we don't have to talk about the fact that i haven't made a Mystic Orb Amulet for the neck yet.

Elektra:
My latest and most ambitious Custom to date: My all time favorite Ninja-babe, Elektra:Assassin. I've been obsessed with this Graphic Novel for years. Bill Sienkiewicz is my hero, and it's Frank Miller's least fascistic work.
Number one: Her dress is backwards. The red shoulder sleeve belongs on the other side. However, this is a very complicated pattern-it took three tries to get this far, and I am happy so far. Stitching all the different flesh strips and dress sections was very confusing, and by the time I realized my mistake, I decided to press on to the finish.
Number two: The head. Mego female heads are attached with a rubber band that connects inside the waist unit. So, after cutting off the original junk head (a BADLY damaged Batgirl) the torso, waist ball-joint, and hips flew apart. The arms and legs are attached separately, unlike the male body. So, I sculpted the neck section with a rubber band in it's center. I baked that part first (turns out rubber bands survive 275 degrees just fine). Once the neck unit was solid I could build the head onto it. I went for the softy-sweet face that Mego used on Batgirl and Wonder Woman. Kind of a tricky balance between the mysterious Assassin and the Marty Abrams vision, but we tried. Painting was tough, because on such a smooth surface you don't want brush marks, and you don't have the crags and creases of the male face to fake the paint job. Gluing the hair cannibalized from a 12 inch recent Wicked Witch was an adventure, and if she didn't have the skullcap to cover it, the top of her head would be an unspeakable mess of hair and glue...The skullcap is fabric that was sewn in a knot in the back, then pulled over her head, rubber banded in place to prevent it slipping off, and then coated in Matte Medium so it would hold the shape of the head and stay permanently in place . It's pretty solid at this point.
The body is slightly spammy now, having been stitched back together, with a rubber band and a slightly heavier head, but I'm pleased with this first attempt.
In short, get up close and she's got some problems. But at a slight distance, or in a virtual environment like this, ELEKTRA LIVES!

Superboy:
Hey! Here's my Superboy! He's a 7 inch Teen Titan sized body in a handmade suit. The head is original, with just a bit of paint for the curl in the forehead. I didn't cannibalize a Teen Titan, of course. This is a $6.00 Mego "Lion Rock" WWII figure!

Cyclops and Magneto:
Cyclops was my first fully realized custom. I chose him mainly because he has a simple costume and head. In truth, he was my least favorite X-man, but I've always wanted to start a Mego Xman set, particularly based on the late Seventies-early Eighties Claremont/Byrne Xmen, when both the Uncanny Mutants and Action-Figures were still appealing and compelling.
Magneto, in any age, is still a fantastic character, and I am very pleased with mine. I even kind of like his silly, fabric wrapped boots. Note his right knee is repaired with those replacement knee joints you see sold here and there. Little big, aren't they?

Mr. Sulu:
It was a personal challenge to make this head. I am pleased with the results as a likeness of Mr. Sulu, one of the most requested Star Trek figures of all. I'm not a huge Trekkie, but it bugged me when I was a kid. This is what three years in art scholl will get you, among other things.

Commissioner Gordon:
This is my custom Commisioner Gordon that I made for Robert Levy's birthday. (Gave it to him online, that's why the background is so festive. It was a cool little presentation.)
The suit and overcoat are all handmade. My usual paperclip glasses, a sculpey pipe and badge. Repainted Grandpa Walton's head for this one. It was actually Robert's idea to use Gramps for Gordon.
I want to make trenchcoats for all of my Megos. The pockets are real pockets, too.
