{"id":2969,"date":"2013-04-02T20:57:29","date_gmt":"2013-04-02T20:57:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.megomuseum.com\/galleries\/?page_id=2969"},"modified":"2014-08-13T05:12:46","modified_gmt":"2014-08-13T05:12:46","slug":"the-new-avengers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.megomuseum.com\/galleries\/the-new-avengers\/","title":{"rendered":"The New Avengers"},"content":{"rendered":"<table width=\"100%\" border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"2\" valign=\"top\">\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.megomuseum.com\/teevee\/images\/newavengers.jpg\" align=\"left\" naturalsizeflag=\"3\" \/><span class=\"basicblack\">The<br \/>\nNew Avengers<\/span> was a 1977 follow up to the wildly successful<br \/>\n60&#8217;s Television series simply titled &quot;<strong>The Avengers<\/strong>&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Back for more action was <span class=\"basicblack\">Patrick<br \/>\nMacnee<\/span> as debonair secret agent <span class=\"basicblack\">John<br \/>\nSteed<\/span> in this new series he was joined by the lovely<br \/>\n<span class=\"basicblack\">Purdy (Joanna Lumley<\/span>) and<br \/>\n<span class=\"basicblack\">Mike Gambit (Gareth Hunt)<\/span>.<br \/>\nThe series is mostly and unfairly maligned as not living up<br \/>\nto the high kicking days of <span class=\"basicblack\">Mrs.<br \/>\nPeel<\/span> but still produced some memorable episodes until<br \/>\nthey decided to film the second season in Toronto (the less<br \/>\nsaid, the better)<\/p>\n<p>British toy distributor <span class=\"basicblack\">Denys Fisher<\/span>,<br \/>\nworking with Mego, had planned to release a series of 12&quot;<br \/>\nAction dolls based on the series. The dolls were to have an<br \/>\n&quot;action&quot; karate-type feature. For whatever reason<br \/>\n(poor response to the show, lukewarm interest from retailers),<br \/>\nthe plug was pulled on the line save for the 12&quot; Purdy fashion<br \/>\ndoll (below) and her outfits, plus a Denys Fisher board game.<\/p>\n<p>However, evidence has come to light that a Steed figure <span class=\"basicblack\">may<br \/>\nindeed have been produced&#8230;.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>UPDATE!<\/b> The Museum received this email from a South African collector that adds more weight to the theory. Martin writes in and says <i><b> &quot; I had these new avengers action men when i was a kid ,i had the gambit dressed in a karate suit,my brother had<br \/>\nsteed in a suit and a bowler hat with umbrella and my little sister had the purdy&quot; <\/i><\/b> This was sent in to us before this Gallery was launched so it does indeed seem to tell that these figures were produced for South African consumption.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p><b>The Bowler Hat<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.megomuseum.com\/teevee\/images\/AvengersSteedBottomtn.jpg\" width=\"183\" height=\"150\" align=\"right\" \/><br \/>\n<\/b><\/p>\n<p> A few years ago, collector <a href=\"..\/bonavita\/index.html\"> John<br \/>\nBonavita<\/a> received a letter from a South African die cast collector<br \/>\nwho informed John that the New Avengers figures not only existed<br \/>\nbut that he had them as a child.<\/p>\n<p>To prove his point, the collector sent John the only thing left<br \/>\nfrom his Steed doll, the trademark <span class=\"basicblack\">Bowler<br \/>\nhat<\/span>!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.megomuseum.com\/teevee\/images\/AvengersSteedHat.jpg\" width=\"564\" height=\"360\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The hat, modeled here by an old Fighting Yank doll (oh, the irony&#8230;),<br \/>\nis a tantalizing mystery item that one day may lead us to the unseen<br \/>\naction figure.
