Mego of the Week: The Mark of ZORRO!

3 Zorros makes for one impressive collection!

Our own Dave (Scoth70) recently rescued an original boxed Zorro that had been hiding for over 30 years. So in honor of that rescue I thought we’d talk a little more about it today on Mego of the Week. Dave was kind enough to answer a few questions for us regarding this unique find.

Why is Zorro such a favorite of yours? Zorro is a favorite because I just love how cool he looks….his outfit is so superb, with the cuffs sewn onto the arms the slightly pleated shoulders, the small pleats also in his pants – he looks like he just came from being fitted for a suit. The shiny look to his outfit and that cape, sword and hat put him in that class as one of the coolest looking Megos, in my opinion, also the rarity makes him a real pleasure and honor to own. As he is a much desired and tough figure to get in any form of completeness, to see him in a picture is great but to own him is a totally different experience.

Why is the box so special to you? As with lots of Megos it has that fantastic artwork and no matter what Zorro image that people may have in their minds I always see the image on the Mego box of Zorro where he’s thrusting forwards with his sword …looking at the figure and the box it’s hard to imagine these were made to be played with.. ripped out of the boxes and lost and broken by the children lucky enough to own one…these figures deserve their own little place in history like many more figures that Mego made.

Did the lady know anything about the figure when she found it? I discovered my boxed Zorro via the museum. A lady from here in the UK where I live was helping her brother clear through some loft items he had got hold of just last year in 2010. She randomly looked through items trying to see if anything was worth selling. Up she picked Zorro. He’d been in a loft in Wales in a place called mold for 30 odd years and this was the first time he’d seen daylight since he was stored and left up there. With a little bit of research on the net she soon found out she had found a holy grail, in which she had no idea about until then.

How did you hear about her discovery? She found the museum by looking up Mego Zorro and talked to a few members on here, myself included. From there a while later she got in touch with me and after chatting we were both happy to exchange the sale of Zorro. I am now the first ever Mego collector to own that boxed example of Zorro in which I’m very proud of.

I want to thank Dave for sharing his story with us. It truly is one of Mego/Palitoys best looking figures. It’s simple yet very effective. And Dave has proven once again you just never know where or when original Megos may show up.
