The common release Hutch sports a vest of light brown velvet type material. This vest has been reproduced by Classic TV Toys. The repro vest is darker brown, and is cut differently in the front, more open, especially around the front of the neck. The repro is unmarked. It should be noted the U.K. Palitoy version of Hutch came with a cool leather looking brown vest. This is original issue and has not been reproduced.
Hutch wears a yellow turtleneck sweater/shirt under his vest. This shirt has been factory reproduced by CTVT. The reproduction can be spotted by the tighter weave in the material and the fact that the turtle neck doesn't seem to want to fold over. The reproduction is unmarked.
Hutch most commonly wears cut off black hero boots like Mr Fantastic from the WGSH line. Mr. F style boots boots are factory cut down black hero style boots and one also be found on Star Trek's Cheron. While this version of the boots have not been factory reproduced, uncut black hero boots have been made by both Doc Mego and CTVT. These reproductions can be hand cut down by the user to create an almost factory reproduction of the Mr. F style boots. Doc's reproductions are a little more glossy and a little thicker plastic. DM's are a little thinner up from the ankle which is more noticable when cut than when used as a hero boot. CTVT are closer in shape, but also a little more glossy. The Doc Mego boots are marked DM on the bottom, and the CTVT boots are unmarked. The picture includes a photoshop crop of what the reproduction boots look like cut flat. Also included in the picture are original black hero style boots which are often cut to create "original" Mr. Fantastic style boots. The black hero style boots are found in the Action Jackson Fishing set and also on some Planet of the Apes Dr. Zauis figures. The AJ/Zauis boots tend to be less glossy than the Mr. F/Hutch originals.
It has been said that Hutch can be found wearing Mocs as well, although I haven't seen a carded version to prove it. The Mocs come in brown and burgundy tones. They have been factory reproduced by Classic TV Toys. The reproductions are a darker brown than originals and are a little shorter with a slightly different overall shape. They are marked CTV on the inside. To make matters a little more confusing, Tim Mee reproduced the Mego western line back during the Mego era using the same molds. So there are vintage mocs out there that are identical to mego in almost all respects. Color, material, molds, etc... The Tim Mee mocs are just a touch thinner, making them a little more flexible than originals. The big difference is that the Tim Mee's are marked made in Hong Kong on the bottom, while the original Mego's are unmarked.
Some Mego collectors have said Hutch can also be found wearing Duke/Fonz boots, others deny it. We'll include it for now, but if you want to be certain you have accurate Mego issue footwear with Starsky, better go with the Mr. Fantastic style boots. The Fonz/Duke boots have been reproduced by CTVT. The reproductions, while the same height are thicker with a wider foot opening. They have a rough texture to them as well. They are unmarked.
