American West and Mad Monsters

The Mego Western Heroes and Mad Monsters were born out of an idea to expand Mego's boys line with public domain characters. Mego also sought to combat the officially licensed AHI Monsters . AHI had won the license because Mego didn't want to pay Universal the up front royaties.

Mego never attempted to get the Universal Monster license, as Neal Kublan explains "We occasionally did things that we didn't have to pay royalties, to increase our margins."

Some real high points here are the smooth haired Dracula, prototype frankenstein and the unproduced (but sorely wanted) Dodge City Playset.
