Another month has passed and that means the Mego Museum spotlight moves to a new candidate in the community. This month we “Go Ape” (Sorry, I am bound by law to make that pun at every possible occasion) and sit down with Kraig to chat to him about his collecting philosophy and what brings him joy.
Museum Handle: piecemaker
Real Name: Kraig
Where do you hail from? Illinois
How did you find the Mego Museum? I did a search on Ebay one day looking for my long lost “Planet of the Apes guys”. The first being, my Soldier Ape. I eventually found him and discovered he was made by MEGO. When i was a kid i never paid no attention to what company actually made the toys, I just wanted them, lol. I did a search for just MEGO on Ebay and also discovered a whole universe of completely unknown to me as a kid, MEGO figures. I wanted to learn more and did a web search for MEGO and that’s how I found the Mego Museum.
What inspired you to join the forum? I lurked for awhile, but eventually wanted to be able to talk, ask questions and learn more about Megos from the other members here. There was also all these great customs I was seeing, that seemed like (and it is) a really fun aspect to Mego collecting. Also there was access to the Museums “special features” and benefits, The Marketplace, polls, etc.
What is your favorite Mego line? Planet of the Apes
Happiest Mego Memory? The Christmas I got the Planet of the Apes Action Stallion and Soldier Ape from my Dad.
What is the one thing you’re hunting for? A complete Cipsa Bill. The one pictured is a stand-in with only the head being original Cipsa.
What is one item in your collection your most proud of? I have several I am proud of but I would have to say the one I am most proud of is the carded, gloved version General Ursus, that I was lucky enough to pick up last year.
Any other hobbies or collections? I have some other small collections of different non-toy related stuff and other hobbies, but there never seems to be enough time to do everything I would like to, so its mainly Mego, ReMego collecting and Mego customs for now.
Any words of wisdom for beginning collectors? Try to learn as much as you can about the particular line or lines you are interested in collecting. The members here are a great source of information as well as the Mego Museum Library and Galleries. Accessory Check is an excellent resource for determining Reproduction vs Original accessories, if you are looking for all original figures. You can also check completed auction listings on Ebay and a new sub-forum at the Museum, “The Going Rate” to get a good idea what price range different figures are going for. Enjoy and have fun!!!
Many thanks to Kraig for sharing with us this month! See you in April with another Mego Museum Member Collector Profile!
