In Search of Dr. Banner by Ryan Weaver

One of Mego's greatest action figure successes was its Marvel World's Greatest Super Heroes 8" Incredible Hulk. Based upon the character designs from the comic book ofthe same name, Mego's green goliath benefited from the hugely popular Incredible Hulk TV show. Starring Bill Bixby as Dr. David Barmer (name was changed from Bruce to David for the show), and Lou Ferrigno as the big green guy, the show ran for an incredible (no pun intended), five seasons between 1978 and 1982. This was unheard of then, as well as today, for a live action super hero adventure series. Mego quickly took advantage of Hulkamania by making sure retailers could order its 8" Hulk action figure alone, meaning that the figure had its own assortment and did not have to share carton space with puny figures such as Spiderman.

One of the biggest action figure mysteries that plague stupid little human collectors is why Mego did not produce a Dr. Banner action figure. While the late 1970s was not the time of the now standard industry practice of two-packs (even though Mego did experiment with two-packs in Europe), a Hulk! Banner set would have made an excellent store exclusive. Based upon Mego's policy of reusing older action figures, a Banner figure would have cost thecompany very little in tooling and would have most certainly been a smash with children. Toy executives often short change children by thinking that kids do not want to play with action figures based on characters that are female, bad guys (Hulk Stomp Bad Guys.'), and plain humans. While sales probably would have proven them right in most cases, a Dr. Banner action figure . would have been the big exception in that he is so integral to the whole Hulk mythos.

It is very interesting to note that Mego's bad decision did not stop other companies or even one of its own foreign distributors from giving Dr. Banner his just due. Tara Toys and Sears teamed up on the Hulk Hide-Away playset which offered an 8" cardboard Dr. Banner to be used with Mego's Hulk. This playset came about due to Mego's late 1970s indifference to its own World's Greatest Super Hero action figure line (a subject for another article. See Mega Action Figure Toys by John Bonavita for more information on this playset). Also, the UK based Palitoy featured an incredible Dr. Banner transformation card back for its 8" Hulk action 'figure. Until a Mego Dr. Banner action figure is discovered (after the 12" Mego Mighty Mightor discovery, who knows? Maybe a Dr. Banner figure is just waiting to be found on a dusty shelf in Budapest!), collectors will just have to make do with these and our custom Action Jackson-dressed as Bo Duke Dr. Banners!

Editors Note: The author is a die-hard Hulk fan. Mego Head apologizes for all of the "Hulk Speak" adjectives used in this article!

MEGO FACT #1 BASED UPON RECENTLY DISCOVERED SALES INFORMATION THE 8" INCREDIBLE HULK WAS ONE OF MEGO'S BEST SELLING ACTION FIGURES WORLD WIDE.
