In 1977, when Star Wars became the hit of all hits, Mego promoted their science-fiction properties. Mego’s former VP, the late Neal Kublan, said this tactic was meant to protect Mego’s investment in their next big toy line. “We bought everything in sight, just to protect Micronauts,” he told the MegoMuseum in 1999. Kublan was in Japan meeting with Takara when the Star Wars licensing agent visited Mego, or things would have gone differently. As he mentioned, “it was natural for us,” adding, “We bought the Black Hole, we bought Logan’s Run!” This ad also shows that Mego had already invested in Buck Rogers, which was extremely early in the series’ development.
