Thanks to a Facebook marketplace ad, a toy collector has now discovered the hand made original Mego Star Trek Aliens prototypes.
Tom reached out to the Mego Museum after purchasing a large number of toys from an elderly man who was good friends with a Mego designer.
The majority of the lot being mint, uncirculated carded action figures, there were some unusual loose figures in the mix.
These Star Trek Aliens did not resemble the production figures; they look crude, almost hand-made. That’s because they are the test shots used in promotional photography.
Each of the figures Tom has found appear to be dead ringers from this promotional shot that surfaced a few years back.
Talos has the “love beads” that the production figure was missing and his Nehru-esque outfit was converted into a jumpsuit.
The Mugato still has those PlaidStallions clothes however his handmade feet have sadly deteroriated over the years.
The Romulan’s most notable difference are that the helmet was not Vac-Metalized like the production figure but also the colour of the outfit itself seems to be more of a burgundy.
The other noticeable difference is this figure is wearing black Pirate boots (just like in the photo) and not the rather unique ones the production figure would have.
The Andorian looks the closest to the final figure, the major difference being the incorrect boots and the darker colour of the gloves.
We’re not done sharing Tom’s amazing fortune here, he also has several rare production samples and the prototype for an 8″ Mego Character we never knew existed!
