The Mego Superheroes start small

1973 Mego Superheroes catalog spread

It's hard to believe this but the World's Greatest Superhero Line had a very humble start in the 1973 Sears Catalog, they were regulated to the "Bargain Page" of toys under $2.00, you'd miss them if you weren't careful.

Mego of the Day: The Human Wolfman

Mego of the Day is the wonderful Human Werewolf, Mego went to great lengths to create something that didn't infringe on the Jack Pierce Lon Chaney makeup and created a pretty cool fantasy character. Part monster/Part story book villain, the Human Werewolf is a fan favorite.

Mego of the Day: Frankenbumps!

He never saw release but this cool concept of a figure was eventually retooled into Vac-Man in the 1990s. What is Frankenbumps? Here's what the patent says:

A stuffed toy includes a toy body, a tubular air control seat and an air extractor. The toy body is made from an air impermeable and stretchable cloth material and confines a hollow space that is stuffed with a solid filling material. The toy body is formed with a tubular connecting portion which defines an opening for accessing the hollow space. The air control seat is made from a pliable and resilient material and is secured in the tubular connecting portion of the toy body. The air control seat has a first tubular part and a second tubular part with a first end connected to the first tubular part and a second end that is formed with a control valve. The air extractor is secured in the first tubular part of the air control seat and is operable so as to draw air from the hollow space of the toy body into the air control seat in order to stiffen the toy body and enable the toy body to sustain a desired posture. The second tubular part of the air control seat is deformable to open the control valve and permit air flow into the hollow space of the toy body to release the toy body from the desired posture.

There are currently no known samples of Mr Franken known to exist but maybe someday on will turn up.

Not surprisingly, the Mego of the day today is Dracula (Monsters at Halloween, what a brave choice) not only the toughest Mad Monster to find but the originator of that whole "Tuxedo shirt" fad in the late seventies. Who knew?

Mego Museum's "The Wrath of Khan-Test"

Celebrating the release of EMCE Toys newest Star Trek figure Khan, we've decided to have a contest.

First Prize: An EMCE Khan figure! This new 8" figure features a wonderful sculpt by James "Captain Dunsel" Brady and new packaging artwork by Mego alum Harold Shull, the man who made much of the original packaging so appealing.
This Figure is available at Planet X stores and at Dr.Mego's website.

Second and Third Prize: A Megomuseum mini poster, a selection of cards and stickers.

What do you have to do? Toughen up your Kirk!

That's right, take an action photo of your mego (or EMCE) Kirk and tell us why he can kick Khan's butt. Do whatever you want, be creative, use photoshop if you can, use the 3" movie Kirk, or even just use this photo but give us a good reason why Khan won't be stealing the Enterprise Playset anytime soon.
One entry per person at the Mego Forum
Contest Closes at 9pm EST on Friday October 31st.

Mego of the Day: Fonzie's Motorcycle

Mego of the Day is something no Fonzie doll should be without (but most are sadly) the Fonzie Motorcycle. Despite it's training wheels, the Fonzie Motorcycle brings back to a time when a leather jacket and a solid catchphrase could make you an overnight sensation.

Mego of the Day: KISS Kamping set

Today's Mego of the Day may be the strangest item showcased here, the wonderfully odd (but not produced) Kiss Kamping set. Made for the 12" series of Mego KISS Dolls because everybody knows the boys just love the outdoors in full makeup. Whatever, it was the 70s and perfectly alright for people to have cocktails with their lunch.

The 1977 Mego Green Arrow A Card

An interesting new addition to the Megomuseum Galleries is this 1977 A carded Green Arrow, he most notable feature of these figures is the butterfly punch and the thinner plastic bubble.

While both backers are non glossy on these versions, what's unique about the card on the left unique about the card on the right is it's purple backer, proving to many that there was an Aquaman in this A card series as well..

Mego of the Day: 12" Decker

Throwing out a little love for the much maligned first Star Trek movie today, who cares if they've got uniforms that slightly resemble feety pajamas? Decker is actually the toughest figure in the set and bears a nice resemblance to actor Stephen Collins.
