An Explosion in the Hall of Justice!

this looks like the penguins calling card!

Sometimes you don't see something even though it's staring you in the face. That's the case with today's fun update, we reveal the two different Mego Fortress of Solitude Playsets that are out there. A completely revised gallery that also features new evidence this was originally supposed to be called the Hall of Justice.

I love good Planet of the Apes customs, that's why I'm smitten with Jim's rendition of Caesar from Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. Call it monkey love I guess.....

Rare Canadian Micronauts Spread

mego micronauts in the 1979 eatons flier
Terrific and personal addition to the department of catalogs today, it's a rare page from the 1979 Eaton's Toy Flier. Showcasing the Mego Micronauts, seeing as Eatons is the place I got most of my micronauts, you can figure out why it's so personal. Look for the rest of the flier on Plaidstallions.

Customs Spotlight this week goes to all the folks who donated for the Megomeet auction, what a fantastic success it was and we want to thank everyone for their generosity.

Mego Meet Recap Part 4

Mego Meet Part 4: Presentations
One of the terrific things about getting so many Mego collectors in one place is the willingness of so many of them to share their areas of expertise. The Megomeet seminars are a big part of the event, I'm always amazed at how quickly these things fill up.
The Morning was started with Chris Johnson giving a talk on the Mego military lines.

Chris has to be one of the leading experts on lines such as Mego's First Action Figure Fighting Yank, the Lion Rock World War 2 line and Mego's final foray into action Figures, Eagle Force.
And wow, did he bring props! Chris's talk was peppered with his outstanding collection, the audience was able to see everything Chris was talking about.

After the break, I gave my presentation on two of my obsessions, Comic Action and Pocket Heroes. Ray Miller graciously loaned me some pieces from his collection for display.

I was blown away by the genuine interest that was generated during my talk, everybody was very receptive.

Mike Jimenez followed with an excellent piece on Mego Planet of the Apes figures. Mike knows his stuff when it comes to the Apes and his presentation was not only informative but entertaining as well.

I left Mike's session wanting to rebuild my Apes collection and began eyeing a boxed throne set on a table in the dealers room.

megomeet 2007

Around Noon we all broke for the group photo to commemorate the event.

After the short break, Derek Richardson gave one of the most attended sessions at the whole event, "Restoring and Cleaning Figures". Derek is a wizard at repairing and fixing play worn figures and folks were anxious to learn just how he does it.

This was followed by the widely attened "Customs Q & A" which featured some huge talents such as Brian Leitner, John Farley and Dave McCormick fielding questions on their techniques. This was the perfect segway into our first annual Custom Auction, in which folks donated their custom figures to the museum.

The second annual Megomeet raffle was a huge success with a staggering amount of prizes being donated this year. A nice mix of attendees and online members won this year.

After the raffle it was time for the final session of the day, Museum "Q & A" which generated some interesting feedback for the site. Then is was time to clean up, say our goodbyes and move onto Undo's for the Mego Meet dinner which was attended by about half of the day's attendees.

It dawned on me there that the show in itself is truly unique. All of the attendees could easily buy toys from Ebay but they give their time, their energy and often come halfway across the country to be a part of a community. It's humbling to watch it happen, it's not about any individual or who has what, it's about sharing the experience with a hall full of people who get it. That's what makes Megomeet a success, well that and all the work Dave McCormick puts into it every year.

As I drove home the next day, I thought about how I could help to make next year better, it's infectious! I also couldn't wait to show my son our new playset, an amazing gift from a friend.

Hope to see some new faces next time at Mego Meet 2008!

Mego Meet Recap Part 3: Displays

Mego Meet 3: Display Rooms
If the dealer's room wasn't eye candy enough there was more than enough distraction for the Mego fan. Firstly, the raffle prizes were staggering this year, many thanks to the amazingly generous folks in our community who made it the best we've ever had.
It seems fitting to have a convention for the Megomuseum in an actual museum and this year's toy displays were breathtaking:

Planet of Apes Mego Display

Mike Jimenez brought an inspiring amount of Planet of the Apes rarities to display this year, I'm jealous of your focus Mike.

Planet of Apes Mego Display

Dan Crandall brought easily one of the best MOC World's Greatest Superhero collections in the country. Below is a short video of this display.

Planet of Apes Mego Display

The display room was bursting with 70's joy as usual, from Flinstones playsets to customs to a display of rare Micronauts from Ray Miller. All of this under the watchful eye of some creepy Twilight Zone-esque Mannequins. Click below to see a video of the Display room:

Mego Meet 2007 Recap Part Two

Mego Meet Saturday: Dealer's Room
Somehow I managed to make it to the Meet on time despite only getting four hours sleep. The first things I noticed were Scott's amazing Dida Displays were set up complete with figures. These sets were terrific looking in pictures but even better in person. I wanted to take every one of them home and I wasn't along in that feeling.

Fortunately for everyone there was a ton of distraction in terms of other things to potentially purchase. No matter what you were into, there was something there be it Apes, heroes, rare comic action hero pieces to reproductions to custom figures and parts. I'd honestly have to say this was the most Mego I've ever seen at a toy show and on top of that, there were deals to be had at every turn.

John brought his amazing customs.

The Type 3 Toys table.

Brian Leitner brought custom parts including the suits that folks rave about.

Charlie and Dan brought an impressive assortment of loose and packaged Mego, a lot of bargains were present!

Scott's Dida sets can be seen in this picture, more on those in part 3.

Roberto did not disapoint this year, bringing his usual amazing assortment.

James Gallo make the trek this year bringing with him an amazing amount of rarities.

Mego Meet 2007 Recap Part One

Mego Meet Friday Night

Got into Wheeling this past Friday later than usual thanks to some predictable highway construction. After checking in, I made my way over to the Toy and Train Museum. Despite having been there two times before, it's always exciting to see new and old faces. Not to mention, a whole dealers room dedicated to my favourite subject, Mego toys.

Upon entering the museum, it felt incredibly familiar, certainly not like it had been a year since the last event. After saying my hello's I started perusing the partially set up dealer room and it dawned on me how packed full of Mego it was this year. With dealers extending all the way to the cafteria (and dealers in the cafeteria!) and more to come, this was promising to be an expensive weekend.

One thing about Megomeet is that time flies, mostly because everywhere you go, you run into someone you know. That's the same with money regrettably, after running into Scott Arendsen, Dan Crandall and Steve Moore to settle pre-arranged deals, I was left in need of a bank machine. Wiped out before the show opens, that's got to be a record for me, not that I'm complaining!

I finally tracked down show poobah Dave McCormick, who looked surprisingly rested for a man with no sleep. I had yet to see Scott Adams, Dave informed me Scott had set up an impromptu workshop in the back busily constructing his Dida Displaysets.

It was pretty cool seeing these come together, over a short time I got to see skyscrapers, superhero headquarters, even a pirate ship materalize! I just wish I could have helped.

Food arrived sometime during the evening and everyone took a quick break. While there we got to drool at the dealer set up there, he had some minty boxed stuff including a beautiful boxed assortment of six million dollar man items.

After the break, things began to wind down, the Museum closed at ten and many members met up at Paul Clare's Mego suite for drinks and conversation.

It's not often you get to chat with this many fellow collectors, so it's no surprise, I totally lost track of time. It was 2 AM before I knew it, I stumbled back to my room to catch a few hours sleep before Saturday began.

Part 2: Dealer's Room coming shortly.
