Re-Mego of the Day: Graveyard Zombie

It's October after all and the spotlight should go on a few of the more ghoulish things produced in the last few years, like the graveyard Zombie from EMCE's "Night of the Living Dead" line of figures. Not a license Mego would have jumped on back in the day but one that makes sense now.

Upcoming WGSH Spotlight: Lex Luthor

mattel mego superman from the upcoming worlds greatest superheroes line

Courtesy of World's Greatest Toys author Benjamin Holcomb is the Lex Luthor prototype, our first of the new figures from this Mattel/EMCE collaberation.

With all due respect to fans of Mr. Mxyzptlk, this figure is helping to erase one of the original WGSH lines biggest errors, the addition of Superman's true arch enemy, the leader of the Legion of Doom himself, Lex Luthor.

Again, we have a look that 70s kids will immediately identify as being from Challenge of the Superfriends, Bravo EMCE and Mattel!

Upcoming WGSH Spotlight: Superman

mattel mego superman from the upcoming worlds greatest superheroes line
Now that the dust has settled from the SDCC, we thought it might be fun to take a look individually of wave one of Mattel's World's Greatest Superheroes line (which is, still trippy to say) and hey, it'll pass the time until Spring right? So, courtesy of World's Greatest Toys author Benjamin Holcomb is the Superman prototype, a very fitting choice for wave one as he is part of the "original four".

Eventhough his look has been altered, there is something very familiar about Supes, you can almost hear Danny Dark's voice coming out of this figure, Bravo EMCE and Mattel!

Mego Seminar at New York Comic Con

Be sure to visit room 1A18 tomorrow at 2:30 for:

"MEGO: PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE"
Hosted by JUSTIN ACLIN of Toyfare magazine
Panelists: MARTY ABRAMS, PAUL "DR. MEGO" CLARKE, JOE SENA (EMCE Toys), CHUCK TERCIERA (Diamond Select Toys) DAVE McCormick (Megomuseum)

In the 1970s, MEGO was THE toy company. Their 8" articulated figures, with cloth costuming, made them the "anti-doll" for young boys who wanted to reenact their favorite films or TV shows in the days before videogames. With licenses for virtually every intellectual property at the time, MEGO's line is a time capsule of '70s pop culture.

Since MEGO closed its doors in the 1980s, their toys have become the stuff of legend. Original packaged figures in good condition fetch high prices online and in auctions, as older collectors buy them to relive their childhoods, and younger collectors buy them for their quality and playability. Their combination of innocent clean design and compact articulation made them ideal for this generation's parodists, such as Twisted Toyfare Theatre and Cartoon Network's ROBOT CHICKEN, where they have been exposed to a much larger audience.

The format also makes these figures ideal for the DIY set, and talented amateurs have either repaired their originals or customized their own characters using parts and accessories developed by Paul "Dr. Mego" Clarke, who also provided figures for both TTT and RC.

Finally, in 2005, Clarke and associate Joe Sena of SphereWerx Micromedia developed EMCE Toys with the intention of reviving the classic figures and partnered with MEGO founder Marty Abrams to seek out licenses to relaunch the toys. It became a reality when Chuck Terciera of Diamond Select Toys, master toy licensee for the STAR TREK franchise, took a risk and granted them permission to reproduce the original Trek MEGOs.

The initial line was a hit, and EMCE and Diamond went ahead to reproduce the PLANET OF THE APES figures as well as STAR TREK. The MEGO toys were reborn.

2008 saw the addition of the first new MEGO 8" figures since the company folded in the 1980s, STAR TREK's Khan, Chekov, Sulu and the Gorn, and characters from the cult horror classic NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD.

Abrams, Clarke, Sena and Terciera will be on hand to talk MEGO past, present and future, amid displays and slideshows of vintage figures, playsets and custom figures. The panel is hosted by Justin Aclin of ToyFare Magazine.

And while you're at NYCC visit the good Doctor's booth at 832.

There is also a NYCC exclusive Commander X figure at booth 1927

And keep an eye out for Megomuseum (and Plaidstallions) trading cards all over the show!

Mego Meet 2008 ReCap Part 3 Seminars and Toy Displayhttp://www.megomuseum.com/megomeet/megomeet2008.jpg

Like every year, folks from the Museum community step up and offer to run Mego Seminars in order to provide entertainment for the day. This also helps to thin the crowd down at the dealers area, so it's really win/win. This years seminar's included "Mego Mythbusters" headed by yours truly, Dave always gives me the early class after a pub crawl so he's a lot like my guidance counseller. Dave followed up with an Accessory Check talk based on his tireless efforts in that department.

After our group photo, Doc Mego discussed EMCE toys to a standing room only crowd, the final seminar was the Custom Q & A headed by a foursome of well known Museum customizers, which is always well attended.

In the midst of all this, Chris Johnson's Megomeet exclusive figure "Mighty Mightor" went on sale and sold out. Chris always takes these projects on himself and we're glad he does. While the day was winding down with our Custom Auction and Bandwidth Raffle (both great big successes, thank you very much) I decided to take a look at the epic toy display that was on the upper level.

John Santori provided this fantastic Star Trek bridge for our centerpiece this year and it was well appreciated. I was really smitten with the attention to detail here.

Ray Miller provided a beautiful display of Mego Micronauts including some rare prototypes from the Lords of Light line. Micronauts don't get enough love at Megomeet, so we're lucky to have Ray.

The rest of the display room was no less impressive, with an assortment of rare 3 3/4" figures provided by Chris Johnson and of course, an 8" display that is unmatched.

Finally the hall was home to the selections from the 1978 Project, that Scott tirelessly worked on all weekend. There was also space to some of Mego's rarer items including a horse display that was pretty impressive.

Eventually it was time to pack up, have our well attended annual meal at Undo's and head back to the Mego Suite andbegrudgingly say our goodbyes. We made a few new friends this year and that's what this is all about. Mego Meet 2008 was another roaring success and a tremendous reflection of all the good people that I'm happy to be affiliated with.

See you next year!

Mego Meet Recap Part 2: The Dealers Room

mego meet

Dealer's Room
A close second to being in a room full of people who share your obsession (and speak your Mego language) is the Mego Meet Dealers Room. Whether your poison is MOC, loose, custom, repro, parts, you will never find a better grouping of all things Mego under one roof than here.

mego meet
The room was always tightly cramped, I often had to wait until Seminars were in session to get a good shot of what was available. Here are some but not all of the vendors in attendance:

mego meetArt Balthazar brought his impressive custom collection for all too see, he was also signing copies of my son's favourite comic, Tiny Titans.

mego meetScott Adams brought a breath taking assortment of Dida Displays, these sets truly will make you wish you were six again. I'm really jealous of whoever got the last Monster set.

This Quick Video shows in greater details the offerings from Art, Dr. Mego EMCE Toys (the upcoming Khan and Gorn figures are awesome BTW) and Scott's Dida Displays.

mego meet

Roberto "Blue Meanie" Ligotti brought a stellar assortment of items, which isn't really a surprise, he's done it for the past 4 Meets.

mego meet

This case of Roberto's is where most of my Mego Money went this weekend but I am really happy about that, trust me.

mego meet

John from Type 3 Toys was on hand showcasing his creations, the focus is on bronze age Marvel characters and honestly photos just don't do them justice, they are works of art.

mego meet

More from Type 3 Toys, that Deathlok was truly superb.

mego meet

Austin had a great assortment of customs including a '67 Spider-Man that so calling to me.

mego meet

Brian Leitner had an awesome sampling of his uniforms.

mego meet

New to the show Jim Hampton brought a terrific assortment of items including his Sherrif of Nottingham figure which he sold out of at the Meet.

mego meet

Also new to the show was author Sean Griffen, who offered a bevy of minty figures.

Just a fun walk through video of the dealers room.

This video taken around closing time allowed me to get close to the upcoming Castaway toys Captain Action line including the Phantom, these figures looked amazing in person.

Much more Mego Meet Recollection at the Forum.

Coming Next: Mego Display, Seminars and Wrap Up.

Mego Star Trek Returns Twice Plus Captain Action News

mego star trek
weird star trek playset A new addition to our growing department store catalog archive is this Sears 1980 Catalog Page featuring the return of the 8" Star Trek line. Even though Mego had stopped producing the figures in 1977, they made a return to Sears by the late seventies on what many call the "Blank Back Cards" (check the Museum Star Trek pages for more info).

You'll also notice a weird playset on this page, it's actually a recording studio playset for 12" Fashion dolls that has been all "spaced up" so to speak and is not a Mego product.

Speaking of Star Trek returning, our own Roberto (Aka Blue Meanie) has shared some terrific photos of the EMCE toys Star Trek display at this past weekend's New Yory City Comic Con, click here to see more.

Roberto also reports on the Cast-A-Way Captain Action display at last weekend's Comic Con and was very impressed, check out his thoughts on Captain Action, Doctor Evil and the Phantom here.
